A quick guide to the classic 5-point Euchre card game.
Euchre is a 4-player, trick-taking card game played in teams of two. Partners sit across from each other, and each hand consists of five tricks. The goal is to be the first team to reach 5 points, so matches are quick but still packed with strategy. In Euchre Online, the flow mirrors classic Midwest rules: deal, choose a trump suit, play five tricks, and score the hand.
Each hand begins with a dealer shuffling and dealing five cards to each player, then turning up an upcard. Starting to the dealer's left, players either order up that upcard as trump or pass. If someone orders it up, the dealer picks up the upcard and discards one card, and the ordering team becomes the makers. If all four players pass, a second round lets players name any trump suit, keeping the game moving without forcing the dealer.
Once trump is set, it becomes the highest suit. The right bower -- the jack of trump -- is the top card in the game. The left bower is the jack of the same color as trump (for example, the jack of diamonds when hearts are trump) and ranks just below the right bower. Because both bowers are trump, they beat all other cards, followed by the remaining trump cards from ace down to nine. Players must follow the suit that is led if they can; if not, they may play trump or discard.
Play proceeds clockwise for five tricks. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump wins. Teams try to take at least three tricks to win the hand. In standard 5-point scoring, makers earn 1 point for winning 3-4 tricks and 2 points for a sweep of all five tricks. If the defenders take three or more tricks, the makers are euchred and the defenders score 2 points. A player may choose to go alone without their partner for a bonus; a successful lone sweep is commonly worth 4 points.
